John Sidebottom Collection

This collection was kindly donated to UHI Archive by Mr John S Sidebottom, who charged Mr Eric McVicar, member of the University Foundation, with donating it to the UHI Archive.

The collection provides a detailed and accurate depiction of weather conditions in Acharacle, where John lived in his latter years, evidencing changes in climate and environmental conditions. Daily weather records for Ardnamurchan; weather data for wind; wind direction; rainfall; barometric pressure; temperature were collected through the same set of instruments.

Mr. Sidebottom was an engineer by profession, but developed interests in fishing and shooting, and after deciding on a career change, came to live in Salen, Ardnamurchan and started recording the weather as a hobby. Weather recordings have been taken every day since the start of the collection.

A sample of the records was digitised, and the collection can be browsed from The John Sidebottom Collection.
